Census 2010: Confusion abounds for hermaphrodites

“Which box should I check?”, ponders Pat Gillis, a Census Genderproud hermaphrodite and member of The Intersex Society of North America (ISNA).  For the vast majority of the U.S. population, when it comes to checking the Male or Female box on the 2010 Census form, the choice is easy.  If you’re a hermaphrodite, the choice can cause anguish.

There are an estimated 3,000,000 hermaphrodites in the U.S., about one for every 100 births.  Militant members of the hermaphrodite  community have expressed outrage over the 2010 Census form.  Pat Gillis is encouraging all hermaphrodites to refuse to send in their census form.  “President Obama hates hermaphrodites”, Gillis insists.  Not all hermaphrodites agree with Gillis’ views.  “Hermaphrodites need to be counted”, Terry McDonald insists.  McDonald is also a hermaphrodite, but doesn’t feel that militancy will yield any results.  “I’ve been telling all my hermaphrodite friends to check both Male and Female boxes.”

ISNA will be lobbying Congress and the Obama administration to make changes to the 2020 census to ensure all hermaphrodites are counted.
